"We are not exactly the same," Ling replies to this common comment. Highly recommended for both sharing aloud with PreK-2 and for beginning readers.Twins will find endearing advocates in Ling and Ting, Chinese-American twins who good-naturedly defy people's assumptions that they are interchangeable. Not a Silly Story- Combining elements of the previous 5 stories in this book, Ling and Ting write a story about how two rabbits scheme to pick cupcakes off a tree in an adventure that takes them to outer space and back. Reading Minds- The twins experiment with twin-speak, reading each other's minds, and find they are pretty good at it. On the Swings- Ling boasts she can swing higher than the tallest tree, especially considering trees cannot swing on swingsets.Īpples- The twins brainstorm a silly plot to get fresh apples from atop a tree, but in the end settle for the selection at the grocery store. Lucky Red Paint- Ting gets a little carried away when she joins Ling in painting their toys red (a lucky Chinese color) and ends up covered in paint herself. Lucky for her, beans are seeds, which by her thinking guarantees success with starting a jelly bean garden! The Garden- Ting tries to raise a cupcake garden, but discovers the hard way that cupcakes aren't seeds. Twin sisters Ling and Ting star in 6 short stories in this easy reader title. Recommended to any beginning reader looking for fun stories. The illustrations, which the author has stated were inspired by the children's textbook art of the 1950s, were done in gouache on watercolor paper, and were bright and appealing.

That said, the sense of humor here, and the loving and very close bond between the sisters, will also give this series a broad appeal to all children. It's great to see more diversity in the world of early-readers, and Ling and Ting will no doubt be particularly welcome to Asian-American children and their parents, who look to see themselves reflected in the children's books they read. I like the way that Grace Lin emphasizes both the individual characteristics of each sister, and the many things they have in common. Like its predecessors, Ling & Ting: Twice As Silly was an engaging read, with two appealing characters that beginning readers will identify with and take to heart. In this entry in the series, the sisters enjoy some silly times together, planting cupcake gardens, swinging higher than the trees (even when those trees reach into outer space), and creating an amusing fairy-tale about two bunnies named Ling and Ting.
